BREAK UP: Will California splinter into 6 states?
California venture capitalist Tim Draper is backing an initiative to divide California into six separate states.
He argues that the its population is “too big and bloated,” Draper, 5 filed paperwork to put the measure, known as Six California’s, on the November ballot.
Does article 4 section 3 of our constitution Prohibit This?
New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress. By acts of Congress, newly settled or newly acquired areas will be admitted as states on an equal status with those states already in the Union.
Despite the enthusiasm of some in California’s less-populous precincts, the idea has not taken hold more generally in the state. A Field Poll released Dec. 11 found that just a quarter of state residents supported the idea of a breakup, compared with 59 percent who wanted to keep the state intact.
